Hey there. I have put many video clips from vhs and dvd's and even really old stuff I shot (vhs) on-to dvd using my dvd recorder. When I filled the dvd with the clips, I "Finalized" the dvd (so it can be played/read by other brands of dvd players/cpu's). It plays perfectly on my computer. To upload a clip(s) to a website, it needs to be a file type like "MP4", "AVi", etc. I was told by many to used "HandBrake" as it is very easy to use and always works. I downloaded it- and everything was working fine- and very easy to use- I placed the settings at 'mp4' (to change it to / save it as that type) - when finished it always comes up as "M4V" file. (????) Because of this I can NOT upload it. I tried another software called, "FLV save" or something like that- but the same thing happened. 1 person told me, "It's probably firefox changing it." Anyone know?

Do you mean that if you upload an .mp4 file to the web server that the file extension changes to ".m4v" on the server?

This might be a problem with the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox Profile Folder or a problem with the MIME database key or the main .mp4 key in the registry (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT).

You can Inspect the MIME database with the registry editor (regedit.exe) and do a search for that MIME type (file extension) via Ctrl+F.
Be careful with editing the registry as there is NO UNDO possible: all changes are applied immediately.
You can export key(s) in the registry editor before making changes.

You can check some keys in the registry with the registry editor.

  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4

You can check the linked MIME type in the MIME Database.

  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type

I read that the poster is trying to convert a video file to .mp4 and it instead ends up as .m4v

from http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=62723

m4v: .mp4 files with the WRONG extension introduced by apple for video+audio files, m4v can safely be renamed to .mp4
m4v, .mp4v, .cmp, .divx, .xvid, .264: normally raw mpeg-4 video streams (not inside MP4)

You may want to ask for help with handbrake on forums like https://forum.handbrake.fr/index.php to be sure.

The problem with .mp4 is that not as many devices can play .mp4 compared to the old .avi container, though it may be much more common to find newer tv's that can play .mp4 and not .avi.
