You can click the gear icon in the Add-ons menu (hit CTRL+SHIFT+A) and then periodically click "Check For Updates". See screenshot (I need to update a few myself it seems).
I don't know of a way to do it automatically though other than enabling "Automatic Updates" in the same menu.
