I desperately miss a forward/backward button that allows me to surf back and forth across tabs in my entire survival history. The current system is completely overloaded and you can't find the last tab again.

Perhaps ctl+tab or ctl+shft+tab does what you want. See the first setting under the heading Tabs on the General page of Preferences. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/keyboard-shortcuts-perform-firefox-tasks-quickly
