Lost Word document

Hi,

I was on the Facebook page on the firefox browser and I wanted to send a word document to a colleague. I took it from my desktop with drag and drop, and i dropped it in the conversation, but it was not sent, it just disappeared. It was also no longer on my desktop. I searched everywhere in my computer and I could not find it. I even tried some recovery programs, i found the file but it said it s corrupted and it could not open. How can I recover my document?

Drag-and-drop to a browser window definitely should not delete a file. That is very strange. Is there any possibility that your security software might have decided that the file is a threat and either quarantined or deleted it?

Regarding the corrupted file. If you use the File > Browse, there is a format selector that let's you specify, for example, only certain file types you want Word to list. Change that to "Recover text from any file" and Word will scrounge out the readable parts of the recovered file. At least you can see how much is there and maybe use it to reconstruct what you lost.

Thank you for the fast reply.

I just tried the "recover text from any file" and also tried the "open and repair" and it s not working. I don't know if my security software decided it's a threat, but I checked the quarantined files and I didn't find my document.

Do you run Windows? If you had the document on your desktop for a few weeks, you might be able to recover it from a restore point. I do NOT recommend using Windows' system restore feature as that can cause more data loss. But you could try one of these programs to read what is stashed in the latest restore point and see whether the document was there. Then you can export it out to your current live desktop.
