Hi marcoponta, the top line of the drop-down provides information about what Firefox will do if you press the Enter key or click the "go" button in the address bar right now. There are hacks to hide the bar, but that just hides the information. If there is a problem with the operation of the address bar, there might be a setting for that.

You mentioned:

The "autofill" suggestions that appear in the address bar -- which are then reflected in the top bar of the drop-down -- are always top level site addresses. Firefox does not autofill page URLs within a site; those matches are listed further down the drop-down. If you find the top level addresses unhelpful or annoying, you can turn off those in-URL-bar suggestions. The rest of the drop-down will continue to present the usual matches. Here's how:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste URLB and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.urlbar.autoFill preference to switch the value from true to false

Thank you for your reply, but browser-urlbar-autoFill is already False (since a loooong time). Or there is a problem with the latest version and this setting is not working anymore or something else is happening. Thanks

Okay, then I'm not sure what you meant by "incomplete" in your comment.

The situation is simple: . You start writing some address. . "Visit this site" starts filling with your writing. . When you hit Enter, Firefox starts looking for that address. Fake address if you don't finish writing it and maybe leading to some autofilling fake/virused page (OK?). Normally, you start writing and urlbar searchs the approximated one you have (from bookmarks or already visited) AT FIRST (and not visit), so when you hit Enter, the first line is loaded automatically. That's what was happening until this last update. Now you have to write and scroll down on the list to find what you want to avoid this (** disturbing) "Visit this site". I hope now you understand the situation. "Visit this site" must be KICKED OUT or at least have a USER OPTION TO CANCEL IT. It's really useless and very disturbing. Many people asked about this problem and some solutions were given, but now, it seems your are forcing us to use this behavior for the urlbar. And so, you will be losing many users, and maybe I'll be the next one when I find some browser that covers my expectations. And maybe later there will be no turning back until you prove you understand the user's needs. Firefox could be one of the best browsers, but if you don't listen to the users, "one of the best" will not last longer. Sorry to say the truth.

This is the default behavior I'm used to for many years now if you just press Enter and do not select a result from the drop-down:

1. If your text matches a site in your history (e.g., fa => https://www_facebook_com/), Firefox would suggest that in the address bar and load that site -- this is the autofill feature
2. If your text "looks like" a server name (e.g., window.open), Firefox would look up the text as a web address (which would return an error page) -- this is hopefully going to change so Firefox won't try to look up domains for non-existent top level domains (like .open)
3. If your text doesn't look like a server name (e.g., download firefox) it will be sent to your default search engine -- the keyword.enabled preference governs whether Firefox searches from the address bar
4. If searching from the address bar is disabled, Firefox may apply the fixup feature which puts www. before and .com after the text -- the browser.fixup.alternate.enabled preference governs whether Firefox tries this

If your Firefox was automatically selecting the top result below the top (Visit/Search) line, you may have been using an add-on or other workaround to cause that. For example:

In Firefox 56 and earlier, you could install an add-on named EnterSelects. That would move the selection from the top bar of the drop-down to the first one below that, which would make the address bar behave more the way you described.

In Firefox 57-71, users invented a way to inject the code of EnterSelects into Firefox using an XBL binding (combination of userChrome.css + script file sometimes called userChrome.js). This method of injecting code was removed in Firefox 72.

I don't know whether users have invented a new way to inject the code of EnterSelects into Firefox 72+ (for example, through an AutoConfig file).

Ok. Thank you for your explanation. Until this last update, the "visit" was not visible for me and no add-ons are installed except the few necessary ones, like Anti-Virus program. I use PC to work, not to experiment nor playing games and other worst situations. But no solution came from this chat, so I will go on trying to find a solution. If not... Thank you again.

Hi marcoponta, I'm sure you remember there was a major design change for the address bar and its drop-down in Firefox 75. Users could postpone that to Firefox 77 by changing the .update1 preference in about:config, but this no longer effective. If you have been using custom style rules (userChrome.css) for the old bar design to hide the "Visit" row, they probably need to be updated for the new bar. If you never did that, then I don't know why you are just seeing it now.
