Until recently, when I double-click the message in the listing in my Outlook Inbox, the message itself would open in a separate pane. Now, when I double click the message, a new pane opens but it is a mirror of ALL the columns in my mail -- it simply DUPLICATES the screen that I'm looking at rather than just opening the message itself. I want only the message itself to be selected for the ensuing window. The double-click works properly in Internet Explorer. This (new) problem seems to occur only in Firefox.

If Outlook.com, then have you made sure you've cleared your browser's cache with all the recent changes that have been made?

Yes, clearing cookies and cache were the first remedies attempted, but that did not solve the problem. I have a nagging feeling that this problem occurred when Firefox recently updated itself. I can’t be sure, but it’s just a “feeling“. I do not have this problem when I am logged into Internet Explorer.

This can be an issue with the email app or if there are add-ins installed on it. To isolate the issue, let us perform the troubleshooting steps mentioned below:

1. Open Outlook in Safe mode. Right-click the Start button (lower-left corner) in Windows, and click Run. In the Run box, type outlook /safe, and click OK.

2. Check if there's any update for your Office app. Here's how:

    a. Open any Office 2016 app, such as Word, and create a new document.
    b. Go to File > Account (or Office Account if you opened Outlook ).
    c. Under Product Information, choose Update Options > Update Now.
    d. Close the "You're up to date!" window after Office is done checking for and installing updates.

3. Check if you have Outlook add-ins. Click on File > Options > Add-ins > select the Go button besides Manage: Com-Add-in. Check if there are add-ins listed. Clear the checkbox to disable them. Once done, close the Office program and restart it. If the issue re-appears again, enable each add-in one at a time, restart the Outlook, and repeat the above procedure. It will help you to determine which add-in is causing this issue.

Once done, kindly test if you can open an email when you double-click on it.

Thank you so much for suggestions, but, unfortunately, no success. (I'd like to check details on your 3rd suggestion however. I have add-ons - is that the same as add-ins. I disabled all the 'extensions' and that did not restore the double-click message opening. Was it "extensions" that you wanted me to test?)

In the event that a Firefox Update is the culprit, there are two updates that occurred recently. Is it possible to go back by disabling those two updates to see if that restores the double-click? If so or if not, can I then re-activate those updates?

Again, I thank you for your help ...
