Firefox updated to 51.0 on a customers PC

Now a ton of junk wound up in the picture folder, it also duplicated all the junk to the music folder, I have deleted all the duplicates in the music folder but the pictures folder has a ton of trash in it, it does not belong there.

See this screen shot.

Was the update done via Firefox > options or something else? Anything else could be a scam.

Mozilla installers only install Mozilla products. Nothing else.

Let’s do a full clean re-install; Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link} Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86)

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder.
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory.

Do Not remove the profiles folder.

Look for, and rename any Mozilla or Firefox program folders by adding .old to them. Do not rename the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. If all goes well, remove the OLD folders when you are done.

If there is a problem, start your Computer in safe mode and try again.

I will do that later if needed.

My big question is WHY did all the junk wined up in the music folder????

I had to delete by hand about 90 MB of junk, and on a second look it created a second set of document files in the music folder.

Now what is the current level of FireFox??? Is 52.0 the latest? As my PC shows it to be 51.0.1.

You may have ad / mal-ware. Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Hey I'm not in the first grade when it comes to computers, I'm the only computer service guy out here within 50 miles of the nearest city.

The first thing I do is run all sorts of AV and Malware scans for several different suppliers on the problem PC.

But this is the first time I have seen an update to Firefox do this to a PC, I had to weed through all her picture and music folders and delete all the junk manually, it was a big mess.

I saw on another site that it could have been a fake or counterfeit update, if that is the case then it's Firefox that has a problem.

My customer is now a bit afraid to use Firefox and wants to switch to another browser, I have talked her out of it, until I get a better answer then just canned responses.

If the bad program came from Mozilla.org you would be right to be angry with them. But . . . . .

. Whenever you get a message / popup that software / files need to be updated;

DO NOT USE ANY OF THE PROVIDED LINKS

While this may be a legitimate message, it could also be Malware or a Virus. Anytime you want or need to check for upgrades, go to the website of the True Owner of the program in question. For example, to check out Firefox, go to https://www.mozilla.org {web link}

You can report such a site at; Google Report Phishing Page {web link} which is the same when done while on site by going to Help > Report Web Forgery

Help us safeguard Mozilla’s trademarks by reporting misuse {web link}
