Thanks christ1 - this put me on the correct path, although slightly more detail would have been useful. The sequence I used to fix the issue was:

open 'about.config' right click anywhere on bcakground, select new enter 'browser.cache.disk.parent_directory', click ok enter '<path to temp dir in ramdrive or other drive> [note - directory MUST Pre-exist> click OK RESTART FIREFOX check path in 'about:cache' use preferences to adjust cache size as required

Job done.
