I've reset my default search settings numerous times and my choices NEVER save from one session to another. Is there a way to manually edit in order to keep my settings? Windows 7; Firefox version 44.

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

Having more than one version of a program may cause issues. You must remove the older programs. Then get the current full installer.

Try to delete the search.json file and possible search-metadata.json and search.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder to reset the search engines to the default.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

Firefox will rebuild the search.json file from the default built-in search engines that come with Firefox and the searchplugins folder in the Firefox profile folder.

Thank you both for your quick responses.

I uninstalled Advanced SystemCare, disabled Garmin Communicator Plug-In and deleted the 3 .json files as recommended. Unfortunately, the problem remains; default search engine settings are still not being saved.

Is that the only setting that isn't saved?

You can check for problems with preferences.

Delete possible user.js and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename/remove the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in current Firefox releases.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

Thanks cor-el. After some experimenting I was able to get it working when I deleted my user.js file. The default search engine information now saves!

Thanks again for all your help.
