Thank you. It looks like either that would have been renamed or deleted but the process just stopped for some reason with the folder in limbo. I suggest leaving that folder "as is" for the moment and installing again. You can get a full installer for Firefox 38.0.5 from the following page (scroll down to your preferred language):

That's strange. The program folder usually found here is completely missing?

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\

Try installing again. You can get a full installer for Firefox 38.0.5 from the following page (scroll down to your preferred language):

yes...

i just now restarted ff in the .bak folder and it's 38 0 5...

I don't know whether the .bak folder is something that was going to get removed and the process leading up to that just died, or whether it was going to get renamed to Mozilla Firefox. Perhaps someone else has seen that before.

.bak only has a 38 0 5 version... if the .bak were to be renamed it'd be 38 0 6.

I misunderstood you earlier.

What is the full path of the .bak folder?

located a subfolder in mozilla firefox.bak called 'updated' with as many subs as .bak and with a file date of 6-10-2015... i imagine this is 38. 0. 6 .... but what trouble will i get if i move it to a new folder mozilla firefox that i create? is this a solution or spaghetti logic...

more options

Okay, that doesn't really answer my question.

The update folder is not a stand-alone installation of Firefox, so don't try to use it for anything.

Also, there is no Firefox 38.0.6. The current version is 38.0.5.

full path is c;\programfiles (x86)\mozilla firefox.bak...

Interesting, because I lost the most the use of my FF too after tuesdays MS updates. And am using IE for anything that needs Google approval. Also my ATT DSL keeps on denying FF but not IE signal. ????? Use Windows 7 and right now FF for browsing, after restoring in Safe Mode to a week ago and not updating. I cannot figure this out.

'thanks jscher will the new install of 38 0 5 keep my add-ons, settings and prefs? I am now using the 38 0 5 in the m...f... bak folder.

Hi greasyflipflops, the installer should detect your settings folder (Firefox profile folder) automatically. If you are nervous, feel free to make a backup copy of the entire folder. You can find it by pasting this into the Start menu search box and pressing Enter:

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

That should expand on the Windows Explorer address bar to

C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

If you see more than one semi-randomly-named folder here, your active folder usually is the one with the most updated file dates inside. It's best to have Firefox fully closed when copying this folder, since some files might be in a state of partial update at any given moment when Firefox is running.

thanks very much... i reinstalled 38 0 5 cleanly... it tells me that i am 'up to date' so i'll wait till it catches up with mozilla-home...

thanx i cant stomach chrome...

should I now delete the mozilla firefox.bak directory?

more options

You can probably delete it. The only unique things in there might be a few old plugins that were installed directly to the folder. You could just keep a copy of these two folders in case you find some plugins missing and it's not convenient to reinstall them:

  • \Mozilla Firefox.bak\Plugins
  • \Mozilla Firefox.bak\browser\plugins

Firefox is still blocking all things Google, despite of doing all below and starting fresh. I read on Google forums that a lot of folks are having issues with Google's changing login ways....
