I left home for work and had a game on the screen when I left. I had some important search history and it was deleted, and my default Mozilla home page had been changed to MSN and what seemed to be a 2nd tab for Ask.com. Why did this happen? Could someone have gotten onto the computer, or could of it crashed? (Note: I do not have the clear history automatically when Firefox closes option checked)

Hey rnull123,

Firefox crashing shouldn't change your home page or clear your history. Someone else may have used it. I would recommend setting an account password and locking your computer when your aren't using it (Windows button + L).

A lot of malware will also change your homepage, it might be worth doing a couple scans. You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one. Windows 8 has antivirus built-in already.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

curtisa Well said.

rnull123 Please try these out.

Bookmark and use this; Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.

Settings Guard for Firefox {web link} Detects and resets changes to settings that are frequently done by add-ons and application installers.

Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox?

You can check the home page setting:

  • Tools > Options > General > Startup: Home page

Firefox supports multiple home pages separated by '|' (pipe) symbols.

You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:
