Problem with space bar and installed search engines

Every time I press the space bar in certain fields or on certain chat sites, the cursor jumps to the field for installed search engines that to the right of the main navigation field. I can't get rid of the search engine field. I effectively can't use my space bar on certain sites. How can I stop this from happening?
