did my updating windows 8 to 8.1 cause firefox to almost continuously slow dow or freeze?

i updated my windows 8 to 8.1 last week and since then i have numerous freezes per day and am asked every time i turn on my computer if i want to make firefox my default browser. i keep saying yes and unchecking and it still asks me the same thing. did the update cause this? when i turn on my computer, i cant always connect to firefox or anything else with a message that there is an error in loading the page, but i am always connected. i am almost beyond frustrated. did the update do this. i am ready to quit, though i dont want to. i have used and been satisfied with firefox for years.
