when opening calendar, i get a popup event for sepy 15, 2016...wants me to delete it or discard my changes and reload...neither works, it pops up again next time i open calendar. event is not listed anywhere in calendar

Could this be a deleted recurring event? Try opening your Thunderbird profile folder (use Help > Troubleshooting Information and click Show folder), close Thunderbird and delete the cache.sqlite file in the calendar-data sub folder (or rather, move it elsewhere.) Also have a look at this question. Could you report back?
