Firefox 8 crashes when I go to "play against the clock" on the nytimes crossword website, while this never happened with Firefox 7.x. How can this be resolved?

I have an iMac with OS 10.6.8, and a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Until I recently updated my Firefox browser from 7.x to 8, I had no problems with the nytimes website. The site I go to for puzzles is shown in the address line as:www.nytimes.com/pages/crosswords/index.html?ocid=1&incamp=xwords:section_front. But, the address that shows when I place my cursor over my bookmarked site is:http://select.nytimes.com/premium/x...?ocid=1&incamp=xwords:section_front. At this site there is an option to play against the clock. The crash occurs as soon as I click on the "play" button. Unless I clear the recent history of the browser, Firefox 8 does not work. If I close Firefox and reopen, it will not open. Instead I get a message that Firefox is sorry, but ... . This never happened with previous versions of Firefox. I've written to nytimes, but haven't heard from them yet. It does seem that there is an incompatibility here, but I don't know how to resolve it. I'm hoping you might help me in this. Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

If you have submitted Breakpad crash reports then post the IDs of one or more Breakpad crash reports (bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx). You can find the IDs of the submitted crash reports on the about:crashes page. You can open the about:crashes page via the location bar, like you open a website.
