Awkward access to Firefox 7 bookmarks in Mac OS 10.5.8

I just updated to Firefox 7 from 3.6.15 (I'm running Mac OS 10.5.8 on a MacBook Pro).

I have quite a long list of bookmarks, both individually and nested within folders or subfolders. In 3.6.15 I had no problem scrolling down to access any of them. Now, however, it often takes several attempts to stop at the folder I want - often the cursor will stop at another folder and won't move past it. The only way I can access the folder I want is to go back to the top and try again.

There was a similar posting in June 2011 (Cascading menu of bookmarks now awkward), but that problem occurred in F5.0 rather than F7.0. A Mac Bug was posted last January, but that was for F4.0 beta, suggesting that the issue was related to 64 bit Macs and suggesting that shortening the bookmark titles might help. I've tried that, but it doesn't seem to work.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi mal9 .

I"m also using Mac 10.5.8 with FF 7. I had the exact same, unbelievably annoying, problem you describe .

I just followed cor-el advice - and it certainly works.

I had 1 very long bookmark name on my "Bookmarks menu" menu list. (I have there about 80 Bookmarks + 6 folders with hundreds of bookmarks inside them) I shortened it - Problem is now Gone .

You do not need to shorten all the bookmarks in the folders. Just the ones on the main menu

That can be caused by having some bookmarks with a long title.
The width of a column in the Bookmarks menu list is in current Firefox versions automatically adjusted to fit the bookmark with the longest name.
You can check the names of the bookmarks and make the longer ones shorter.

Thanks for the suggestion, cor-el, but that really doesn't tell me more than what I already knew :-(. As I explained, I have a long list of bookmarks and have spent quite a bit of time already shortening bookmarks in response to the previous query about Firefox 5 but it doesn't appear to help.

Does this mean I have to go through virtually all my bookmarks (I probably have 400 - 500) and shorten them? (I'm also not clear by how much they need to be shortened even if I was willing to continue spending time on it). Frankly, both the problem and the solution suggested are a major inconvenience. This seems to be a bug that needs to be addressed - from your response, it seems that though the bug was identified at least with Firefox 5, it still hasn't been addressed with Firefox 7.

I have never had any problems like this with previous versions of Firefox on this computer (MacBook Pro) and this OS (Leopard). If this isn't fixed, I'm afraid I may have to switch browsers (I've used Firefox for several years).

Hi sdkvnfweklfdsfsd,

Many thanks for your feedback. I initially didn't quite understand cor-el's advice, but after your e-mail, I looked more closely for the "Bookmarks Menu", found it, and shortened only the bookmarks within it (I really didn't know which one or ones to shorten, so just went through and shortened as many as possible). That seemed to work and Firefox 7 now seems to work fine!

(Hopefully the bug that creates the problem will be addressed in a future update! :-) ).

Thanks again!
