I can't "paste." I can copy names, email addresses, urls, but i can't "paste" them in a new window. help?

I sometimes copy and paste information on different parts of Firefox. I might copy and paste name and/or addresses in my email account. I also might copy and paste an url addresses to search on the internet. Well, today I can "copy" what I want but I can't "paste" it because the paste icon in EDIT with not darken--it isn't available. In other words, I can't "paste" and go on with my searching, or saving, or reading or . . . anything. Can you help?
