Thunderbird seems to have gone ?

I went to open Thunderbird and received a message that says:

the item 'thunderbird.exe' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly

I keep hundreds of my client folders in Thunderbird and I cannot access them, it just seems to have gone !? My stomach is in a knot !

If I look in my program folders under Mozilla Thunderbird there are only x2 folders, one called 'extensions' which is empty, and another called 'tobedeleted' which has only one file in it called: rep73feeee9-1bcf-ae16-4e52739a8944  ?

If I do a search for thunderbird there is only one result, which is the one above.


I know that my 'Profile' is still on my system.

I have had a similar thing before and a kind Man helped me get it back. Can anyone help Please ?

I suggest doing a backup first of the profile. If using Windows, that would be at c:\users\<yourid>\appdata\roaming\thunderbird (not generally needed, but I like being safe.) Now download and install thunderbird. It will overlay any remaining remnants. I have no idea what may have deleted the prior version, possibly an antivirus program?

Hi David,

I have copied the profile folder to a folder I created in 'My Documents' called 'thunderbird' I had this same problem back in 2022 and I think it may have been you who helped me retrieve my data back then ? I don't know why this has happened, I just opened my PC to access my client folders and received the message about the shortcut not working ?

I will download and install thunderbird now.

You're welcome, but if you are using an antivirus, I suggest seeing if it is the culprit. Some such software removes software without notifying the user, and that seems to be happening to you. A possibility is to see how to exclude some programs from being monitored. I wish you well.
