Just donated but since latest update lost the ability to see both my email accounts at the same time. This is a disaster for me; 78 and not a software expert whatsoever. Can't find a way around this after many hours of hassle. Can anyone help please? Alistair Macfarlane [removed email from public]

Please provide more information. I am unsure of what you mean, that you cannot see them at same time. Are you trying to use the unified view?

Tried to send you 2 replies but found that it is not sending the emails so trying again. First thank you so much for your invaluable support. I went to my computer and found the 'unified view' but ticking it made no difference to the issue as I am still only able to see one of the 2 email accounts. I need to be able to see the inbox, sent, trash etc for each account which is what I had previously but I can't even get back to the other one now. So all I can do is use the phone to communicate with you. Hope this is explaining what is going on. Best regards Alistair

re :So all I can do is use the phone to communicate with you.

You can use the browser because that is where all comments are displayed in the forum. If you set up this Firefox account to send to a specific email address and that is the email account not displaying then you could use browser and logon to webmail.

re :Tried to send you 2 replies but found that it is not sending the emails

If you receive email then you do not click on 'Reply'. In the email content, it will have a button that says something like 'Chosen Solution' and next to it some text 'This did not fix my problem' - click on the text and it auto opens up in this forum question.

re :I need to be able to see the inbox, sent, trash etc for each account

Can you check throught the following and post back info on each query.

In the Folder Pane: I'm assuming you can only see the folders of one mail account. But do you the name of both mail accounts? But only one account name has folders.

If you see the name of account but no folders: Do you see a > chevron on the left side of the mail account name ? If yes: Click on that > chevron - does it reveal folders? Tell us if account name is visible but no > chevron.

Check these settings: 'View' > 'Folders' > 'All' should be the only one selected. If any of the others are selected then uncheck them. Confirm only 'All' is selected.

Check the Account Settings: Menu icon > Account Settings Do you see both mail accounts listed in the left pane ?

Is the account with missing folders a pop or imap mail account ?

OK Toad-Hall I realised that I need to communicate via this and not email. So there is no > after the email address which is after the 'inbox' word. There is no way to see the sent or trash email lists. I set the 'view' setting back to 'all' only having unticked 'unified' . Still don't have any improvement I'm afraid. That was how it was set before the thing went haywire anyway! Both accounts are shown in the left of the account pane OK. Sorry but I have to admit that I don't know whether they are pop or Imap as I don't know how to check. Can you please let me know? Thanks and best regards Alistair Macfarlane

Menu icon > Account Settings It opens in a new tab

Select 'Server Settings' for the problem mail account name On the right, at the top it will say 'Server Type' Does it say 'Pop Mail Server' or 'Imap Mail Server' ?

Good morning Toad - Hall. Thank you for your help. I looked at the account settings for both of them and the one which is totally missing has no server type. Its account name is mail.surfree.co.uk; don't know if this helps? The one which is showing only the inbox is an Imap. I turned the computer off last night and rebooted it this morning in the hope it might cure the problem; it doesn't but I noticed the missing email account briefly flashed up on the screen before it went to the inbox of the second account again. The entire layout of the one which is part working is quite different from what I used to have too. Hope this maybe gives you a better idea of what might be going on? Best regards Alistair

Toad-Hall just shut down TB and started it up again. A message saying 'updating TB' came in but it's not changed anything. I did notice some others are having the same issues. Best regards Alistair

Another weird problem showing up. The time on the computer has changed by over an hour! Could this have an effect on TB? I can try to figure out how to reset it but I'm sure it was set to UTC before. I also ran a virus check and it was clear. Best regards Alistair

No more replies from anyone to help so I posted another question. The missing email account has now started (and stopped) showing that it is a pop account whilst the other is Imap. Really appreciate your help as I can see that the emails are built up for the missing account but I can only see them on my phone. Best regards Alistair

No. Thunderbird takes it's time based on whjatever the computer is set up to use as a Date and Time and Timezone.

re : I looked at the account settings for both of them and the one which is totally missing has no server type.

That's not right. I've added an image below of a typical pop account 'Server Settings' At top it says 'Pop Mail Server'

You say: "The missing email account has now started (and stopped) showing that it is a pop account " Does this mean the Account Settings > Server Settings now state it is a Pop Mail Server or that it did for a moment and now its blank again.

Can you check something, I'm wondering if you have a problem with a prefs.js file.

  • Menu app icon > Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • Under 'Application Basics' section - about half way is 'Profile Folder' - click on 'Open Folder'

I'll post some images as a guide. Please note: In this forum question those images will look like a small thumbnail image, but if you click on them they appear much larger.

A new window opens showing the contents of your 'profile name' folder.

  • Exit Thunderbird now - this is important.
  • Scroll down and locate the 'prefs.js' file.

Thunderbird is currently using the 'prefs.js' file. Does it have a recent date when created? IF Yes: Do you see more 'prefs.js' files ? Maybe they have a number eg: 'prefs-1.js' How many of these do you see ? Look for the one with the highest number. That will be the last one used. Does it have a good size? IF yes, it is a good size then try this:

  • Rename 'prefs.js' to 'prefs.js.old'
  • Rename the 'prefs-n.js' (where n is the highest number) to say 'prefs.js'

Do not worry, you can always go back to the original if required. Nothing has been lost.

Start Thunderbird.

This will tell us if the prefs.js was causing a problem.

What version of Thunderbird are you using: Help > About Thunderbird This tells you the version you are currently using. Does it mention anything about updating or restarting to update?

Hi 'Toad-Hall'. In answer to your question about the pop server; yes it did appear and disappear in different opening of TB. I found the 'prefs' files; there's 5 inc the one with no number prefs. js, and renamed the prefs-5 to prefs-5.js.old. But I noticed that the latest one is the prefs.js so I assumed it was the current one and presumably the one causing the problem. So I also renamed it prefs. js. Old2. Curiously prefs-4 is not there so either it's deleted itself or wasn't there at all. Anyway I started TB and found it was showing the missing account but only the inbox. I think it might be earlier than the time I installed the second account so maybe it should have been prefs-5 I should have renamed prefs. js? If so I can try that. Seems like some progress?

Just realised that prefs-4.js was the one I renamed prefs. js but because it would not rename it because the filename was already in use I thought I could not do it. So I went back and switched the name of prefs. js. old2 to prefs.js having again renamed the previous one to prefs. js. Old3. Now I have back both of the accounts but the pop one is missing sent and trash now. Where do I go from here? Even the archives are back. But not the sent ones which I really need! Best regards Alistair

Hi Toad-Hall. So I did what I said and now have found that the update must have changed the settings of sent to Local folders as they were in there. I have changed it back to the mail. surfree one and ran a test which I found produced a 'sent' folder so I think if you can explain how to move the 'sent' in Local folders to this the problems may be solved (?). Thanks for the help you have given me. Best regards Alistair

Yes. 'prefs.js' should be renamed to 'prefs.js.old'

re: prefs-5 I should have renamed prefs. js?

Yes, 'prefs-5.js' should be renamed 'prefs.js', so it can be used.

How to get a copy of the 'Sent' currently in 'Local Folders' into the mail. surfree account.

Two Options: 1. Within Thunderbird, you could do a copy of emails. In Local Folders, select the 'Sent' folder to see emails. Select the first email to highlight so focus is in the Mesasge List. Then use 'Edit' > 'Select > 'All' OR use keyboard shortcut 'Ctrl+A' All emails are now highlighted, Right click on the highlighted emails and select 'Copy -to' and choose the 'Sent' folder on the surfree account.

But if you have a lot of emails or even subfolders you may find it just as easy to do it via the profile folders.

2. Via Profile Folders

  • Menu app icon > Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • Under 'Application Basics' section - about half way is 'Profile Folder' - click on 'Open Folder'
  • Exit Thunderbird now - this is important.
  • Double Click on 'Mail' Folder to open and see contents

It will list all the pop mail account folders and Local Folders mail account folder.

  • Right click on 'Local Folders' and choose open in a new window

You will see: 'Sent' file - it has no extension and it will have a good size. This is an mbox file. It contains emails. 'Sent.msf' - this is an index file used by Thunderbird - it does not contain emails.

  • Right click on the 'Sent' no extension file and select 'Copy'
  • Go back to the other window which shows the contents of the 'Mail' folder.
  • Double Click on the surfree mail account folder to open it.

You will see: 'Sent' file - it has no extension. This is an mbox file. It is the new one you created.

  • If it has very recent emails which you want to keep then: rename as 'Sent-2', but if it is still empty then delete it.
  • Right click and select 'Paste' - this will put the copied 'Sent' mbox file into the surfree account.
  • Finally, delete the 'Sent.msf' index file.

Now start Thunderbird.

You should have a complete copy of the Sent emails displaying in the Surfree account.

If you see a 'Sent-2' folder with some new emails, you could move them into the 'Sent' folder. Right click on email in list and select 'Move-to' and choose the 'Sent' on surfree account. Then you can delete the 'Sent-2' folder.

If desired you can choose to delete all the emails in the 'Local Folders' 'Sent' folder assuming you have checked they were all copied over correctly. After deleting all the emails remember to compact the folder to clean it up. Rigth click on 'Sent' folder and select 'Compact'
