My outgoing emails bounce when my Firefox VPN is turned on. They do not bounce when it is turned off. How can I avoid email bounces without turning the VPN off every time I want to send an email? Can Firefox VPN whitelist my SMPT server?

It sounds like our latest version of Android has split tunneling so it should be coming to Windows REAL soon. Sorry again for the inconvenience.

Hi

Just to clarify, are you using the browser level protection or the device level Firefox Private Network?

more options

Seburo - I am using the device level Firefox Private Network. My ISP and my normal email provider is chartertn.net. I also have an account with gmail.com. With the VPN off, I can send and receive email from either account with no problem. With the VPN on, I can send and receive email from the gmail account with no problem, but with the charter account, I can receive email but not send it. I can avoid the problem by turning off the VPN when I want to send email, but I would like a better solution to the problem, if possible.

To confirm, what browser are you using when you run into this issue with charter email?

more options

Eve -- I am using the Firefox browser, Version 77.0.1 (64-bit).

what is the webmail address again? chartertn.net won't resolve on our end.

more options

Eve -- chartertn.net is the email address I have had for many years. Charter (or Spectrum) has not issued that type of email address in several years. The vast majority of their addresses are charter.com, without the tn appendage. My guess is that these tn-type email addresses were issued to people who were subscribers to a small ISP in the area that was purchased by Charter many years ago. For some reason, Charter has not moved those of us with chartertn addresses to just plain charter.

Eve -- A correction to my previous post of 06/05/20: The email addresses of Charter subscribers are normally charter.net, not charter.com.

So you log into charter.net and cannot send emails out from your webmail portal (your email being a chartertn.net address) ?

more options

Eve -- I use an email client named eM Client, so I don't log in directly to chartertn.net or charter.net. My email address is, as stated previously, cdiebert@chartertn.net. The email client uses mobile.charter.net (port 993) for incoming email (IMAP) and mobile.charter.net (port 587) for outgoing email (SMTP). I might also add that I get the same refusal to send, when I compose and send an email online after logging in at the Charter (Spectrum) site. The error message I receive at the Spectrum website is "Your message was unable to be sent. Please check your network connectivity and try to send again. (Error: 5.2.0 66.71.247.204 is listed on Cloudmark CSI-Global. Please visit:// https AUP#Out-1200 )".

It appears that my problem arises from aggressive flagging of potential spam by Charter. The IP address I am trying to send from has been flagged by Cloudmark CSI as potential spam. If this is the case, there is probably no solution other than to turn off Firefox VPN when I want to send email through Charter, or use a different email provider like gmail that doesn't have such an aggressive spam policy. I would be interested in your diagnosis of my problem and possible solutions.

Thanks for the reply.

One thing we can try is "allowing local network access" while the VPN is on by going to the gear icon(settings) -> network -> Allow local network access, it's a long shot but worth trying. Other than that, we are working on split tunneling which would allow you to pick and choose what applications will go through the VPN and which ones will avoid it, which would resolve situations like this going forward. Please look forward to that, at the very least.

Do you know if your email is getting flagged as spam regardless of what city you're connected to?

Thanks!

Eve -- I have been using "allowing local network access" from the beginning of my use of using Firefox VPN, so this potential fix does not work for me. I have been searching the internet periodically for a possible solution. I have not found a fix for my problem, but I did find a description of the problem which seems to fit my situation exactly. The description can be found at the website of the VPN provider, IPVanish. See: https://support.ipvanish.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002074694-Email

With regard to your question, "Do you know if your email is getting flagged as spam regardless of what city you're connected to?", the answer is yes. No matter which server I connect to in the Firefox VPN app, my outgoing email is bounced.

I know my problem is not unique, so I am glad to hear that Mozilla/Firefox is working on a solution to this problem. Thank you very much for your thoughtful consideration of my problem. I will await the introduction of split-tunneling.
