I cant find downloaded messages on my computer

I read the file on synchronization. I unchecked the box to save files. I checked the boxes to download messages to my local computer. I do not see downloaded messages in my local folders. Do I need to wait for the server to respond?

If you had this checkbox selected: 'Keep messages for this account on this computer' then in the past all the selected imap folders should have been synchronising and keeping a copy in the imap mail account.

But then you unchecked this, so at this point I'm assuming you did not want all of the folders synchronising, just a select group. So you clicked on 'Advanced' button and selected a few folders.

So some (unchecked) would just downloaded headers and the others selected in the 'Advanced' button section would download full emails.


This now means that those selected folders will be the only ones that will synchronise and download all emails held in those selected server folders.

re: I do not see downloaded messages in my local folders. 'Local Folders' is a special mail account. It will not synchronise with any imap mail account server.


When did you create this imap mail account? Have you ever seen folders and emails for this imap mail account?

Have you subscribed to see imap mail account folders?

  • Right click on imap mail account in Folder Pane and select 'Subscribe'
  • a list appears
  • select all the checkboxes of all the folders on server which you want to see.
  • Click on 'Subscribe'
  • click on 'OK'

In the left Folder Pane, below the imap mail account name: Do you see the folders in the imap mail account?

I subscribed to all folders in my account. In synchronization, I checked all boxes for offline use. In copies and folders there is no item for inbox or trash. The ones I did set up I am getting email in my local folders. In the server section, the local listed folder "imap.comcast.net" has no email. In the advanced Account Settings, the "IMAP Sever directory" box is empty. I have created the same folders in my local folders that are shown under my account name. The only folders that are receiving email on my local folders are the ones setup in copies and folders. Inbox and trash are not included. I still am not getting email in my local inbox an trash folder. I can't check the other boxes because I don't have many Anti-Spam, Archives, Drafts, or Junk email.

re: Folder Pane. You confirm you have subscribed to see all folders.

re: Server settings

  • Right click on imap mail account and select 'Settings'
  • Select 'Server Settings'

This is where the Inbox settings are setup.

  • Select 'check for new messages at start up'
  • select 'check for new messages every 10 mins'
  • Select 'Allow immediate server notification when new message arrive'

When I delete a message: - this is where the trash is slected.

  • select : 'Move it to this folder'
  • select the name of the server 'Trash' folder on that account.


re :In Account Settings 'copies and folders' there is no item for inbox or trash. That is correct: it is for you to select Sent, Drafts, Templates and Archives. making sure they have selected the correct named folders for that imap mail account. Example: if you have subscribed to see server 'Drafts' folder which you should have done. keep draft message in: select 'Other and select the 'Drafts' folder on the imap mail account.


'Synschronisation & 'Storage'

  • select: 'Keep messages for this account on this computer'

under 'Disc space'

  • select: 'Synchronise all messages locally regardless of age'
  • select 'Don't delete any messages'
  • click on 'OK'

Exit Thunderbird Allow a little time for background processes to complete. Start Thunderbird.
