I'd like to generate reports that show email volume for a given time frame and display the results in histogram form. I don't know if this is something that I should be doing through thunderbird or via my email provider which is hostgator. I work in real estate and I'd like to see which days of the month generate the greatest number of inquiries.

There's an add-on called ThunderStats that generates statistics from your email traffic, I don't know if that would do what you want? There may be other add-ons too, just search in the Add-ons Manager.

Thunderstats for some reason isn't working properly. I downloaded mail summaries - and it gets me close. Instead of an addon I'd like to be able to generate these reports myself. If I knew how to query it myself I'd be able to do so. Don't know if thunderbird uses SQL to store message subjects, dates, etc.

It doesn't use SQL as far as I know. All the messages in a given folder are concatenated in a single text file with mbox format. You can easily read them with a simple text editor - 'notepad' if you use Windows I think. The file locations are explained here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird
