Cannot open messages after starting Thunderbird

When I open Thunderbird and I click on a message Thunderbird does not react, I have to force a shutdown. I de-installed and downloaded the lastest Thunderbird version 38.5.1. The problem turned out to be still ther. Someone suggested I might have a corrupted mail database. I have installed Windows 10.
