My server type needs to be an IMAP Mail Server, but both the standard wizard and customized wizard make it into a POP server type. Nothing works.

The first time I tried to install thunderbird, it automatically gave me an IMAP setting. I was given the opportunity to change it to a POP setting. I should not have done that. It was right the first time. I then went into server settings and changed the server name from POP to imap.fsu.edu. However, the words above the box, which say "Server Type: POP" do not change. When I try to open Thunderbird I get at error message, "error on POP3".

I have deleted Thunderbird three times and reinstalled it three times, twice using the custom setting. I never again have been given the opportunity to choose IMAP rather than POP, and every time I get the message when thunder bird opens of error on POP3.

If the install wizard is not working get the account settings from the working installation and do a manual install.

You are deleting the wrong thing. You need to remove the account and stop reinstalling Thunderbird. Your settings are stored in your profile and is separate from the program. Remove the account and then add it back as IMAP.

Many thanks. This did solve the problem as I stated it. However, my e-mail still does not work. I am trying to reinstall Thunderbird on my Sony all-in-one which crashed and was wiped clean. I also have a Sony lap top Vaio which has Thunderbird on it. That is working fine. Prior to the crash the e-mail on both of my computers was synchronized. No problems.

Now when I try to open a new account, Thunderbird finds my existing account but asks me for a password to complete the transaction. I use my password for webmail.fsu.edu, which does work. No go here, though. I do have one other idea, which I will try once 164 updates complete installation on my all-in-one. But if you have any ideas I would appreciate them. Thanks.
