It is possible to unpin them by clicking on the pin icon. However it is also possible to turn off the tiles in the about:newtab page with these instructions: Customize your Firefox New Tab page

Apologies: correction for a mobile device:

  1. Go to the three dot menu, tap on Settings, then tap on Customize, then Home.
  2. From the Panels, tap on each one you would like to hide or show on your home screen.
