Firefox 4.0.1 memory utilisation keeps growing & not releasing memory without even opening new tabs or closing tabs

Since upgrading from Firefox 3 to Firefox 4 I noticed that the memory utilisation of Firefox keeps growing even when there's no new tabs / windows being opened or any activity. To release memory I close Firefox, open it again and restore my previous sessions. Just to mention a figure - after restarting Firefox and restoring previous session memory utilisation drops to less than 200K where it was before the restart as high as 700K-800K. I've done this a number of times and it consistently repeats the pattern. I'm currently looking at downgrading back to Firefox 3.
