Firefox won't start, but is running in Task Manager

I was running 3.x for a long time with no troubles. Last week it crashed, and since then I have been unable to start Firefox although it is showing as running in the Task Manager when I attempt to start it. So it opens no window, but appears to be running. Same for Safe Mode. Same for Profile Manager. Can't use switch to from task manager.

I uninstalled 3.x and deleted all mention of Firefox or Mozilla from the registry.

I installed 4, and still have the exact same problems.

Running XP with a load of business apps, but nothing installed recently.
