Thunderbird will no longer display new or older e-mails when opening. How do I fix?

Until a week ago, Thunderbird was working just fine. Then, when I opened it one day, it showed that I had new e-mails, but it would not display those new e-mails, nor would it display any of my older e-mails that I had left in my inbox or in any of my folders. There was no explanation for the problem. I can still get my e-mail on the web, but I need to get Thunderbird working again, as I have material in there I need. How do I get it up and functioning?
