Firefox 6 has disabled my AVG update facility - please help

After downloading Firefox 6 a message told me that an add-on 'AVG safesearch' was incompatible with Firefox 6 and had been disabled. This means I cannot update my antivirus protection/ internet security. AVG have advised me to restore a browser earlier than Firefox 5. Please tell me how to do this.
