New window icon instead of refresh icon

Viewing multiple diverse web sites I have been visiting regularly for a long time, I used to have a refresh icon except during a refresh. Suddenly I have the plus sign icon to open a new instance instead. I found Refresh in the three-dots menu but that is a lot less convenient.

This is on an iPhone 8+, portrait orientation, iOS 14.0.1. The refresh/plus icon position is the center bottom.

I could not find a configuration setting that controls this.

I rarely use Firefox on other sites so I don’t know if this is universal but I believe it is.
