firfox freezes

I just upgraded from 6.0 to 7 on my Windows x64 PC. Firefox now freezes exactly every eight minutes. I've not only disabled all my plugins but have actually uninstalled them. The freeze last from 10-60 seconds. During the freeze I can still hear audio but cannot interact with a web site. I know the freeze has begun because the cursor becomes a circle and if I repeatedly click the site the page itself will become grey out. Lastly, during the freeze Firefox is the most active CPU process (at 13% compared to 1% for the other processes).
