I pinned the new tab page as a way of bringing back the behavior of the new tab page appearing after all other tabs have become closed. Since I don't want to close my other pinned tabs, this is the only way for the new tab page/home page to appear after all unpinned tabs are cleared.

However I notice that search results open in this same tab instead of a new tab, which is a problem that is detrimental for pinned tab users. The point of pinning a tab according to mozilla, is to always keep a website or a page available. If search results are opening in the same tab, the original website that was pinned no longer becomes available.

The solution is to add a preference to allow search results to open in a new tab for pinned tabs. Currently browser.search.openintab is the only relevant option, but that doesn't specifically enable the option of search results to open in a new tab from pinned tabs. In order for the pinned tabs feature to work as mozilla advertises, only results from pinned tabs should open in new tabs so that they don't "take over" the original website that was pinned.
