Unable to install updates - Messages says I don't have required system permissions

Recently, I am receiving a message from Firefox Software Update stating "A recommended security and stability update is available, but you do not have the system permissions required to install it. Please contact your system administrator, or try again from an account that has permission to install software on this computer."

I am the only owner/user/administrator of this computer and been using Firefox for at 3 - 4 years. I have not had issues in the past with installing updates. Why am I receiving this message and how do I resolve it? What 'account' is it referring to?
