How do I check for Firefox OS updates and install them on the ZTE Open C?

more options

The current answer to the question about updating Firefox OS does not seem to apply to the ZTE Open C and/or the current version of the software. Specifically, there is no 'Software Updates' section on the 'Device Infomration' screen.

Hi vamos89,

For the ZTE Open C, there should be a "Software Update" icon on your Homescreen. Make sure to look on all the different pages of your Homescreen.

If this application is not available, you would be able to get assistance by contacting ZTE's support directly, since they are responsible for the device-specific builds.

If you are an experienced user, you may also attempt flashing your ZTE Open C with a newer version:

I hope this information if helpful. Please let us know if you have any other questions about your Firefox OS device.

Thanks,

- Ralph

@Ralph - on MDN under "Upgrading Firefox OS" it says "Open C(European Standard) or Open C(American Standard)". If I purchase a phone in Australia, do you know which type I'd have to choose? Do you know if it's actually possible to upgrade?

Thanks, Albert

if you are adventurous, but not savy enough, i recommend this http://builds.firefoxos.mozfr.org/doc/en/devices/zte-open-c-eu , even though its for ebay_EU, my US version works just fine.

this is community maintained builds for Open C, I m using its aurora build now and it works good.

the linked page describes procedures to first root/unlock the phone, then update it. It also offers all the tools you need to get it done. everything is done via GUI, no command line operation on your pc.

From ZTE Support: "According to what has been found by other users - Our version of the Open C is locked down. Using the EU or US tools is dangerous and usually results in a bricked device if trying to use with an Australian H/W model. The tool we have is not a public release tool and would be used with the EU or US developer F/W builds at your own risk as they are not intended for or built with our device as the target."

Hi retrovertigo,

I contacted our Technical Account Managers for ZTE to check for an alternate way of rooting the device:

For further questions on how and if you can update your device should be directed to the phone's manufacturer who maintains the OS that runs on those phones.

Thanks Ralph, I am in contact already and there doesn't seem to be any way of updating the current Open.

For australian ZTE Open C users, I believe you can find information on how to install a rooted build on the Open C from the ZTE forums. You will create an account there though to access the forum. (this took a day or so for my account to be approved).
