How do I fix this: Today, i suddenly have 4 copies of every old email.

It is downloaidng 6,363 emails right now, which is ridiculous. It shows I have over 16,000 emails, and it should only be over 4,000. Why do I suddenly have 4 times what there should be of old emails, and why am I receiving an outrageous number of new emails?
