Compressed tar File Extension Truncated when Saving File on Mac

When I download and save files, the extension isn't shown but Firefox knows what the file type is and the extension is saved. This is fine, except when it comes to compressed tar files. So, for example, if the file is myfile.tar.gz, I get asked if I want to save the file as tar or gz! If I pick tar, then it's changed to myfile.tar. If I pick gz, then it's saved as myfile.gz. Neither is correct! Why is it doing this? Searches reveal that there have been some issues with extensions in the past, but nothing recent. And the problem only occurs with compressed tar files, which have a double extension (.tar.gz). Both must be saved.

Firefox 53.0.3 (64 bit) MacOS Sierra 10.12.5 (16F73)
