New user of Thunderbird. When I open a message and then take action on it (e.g. delete), I want to get back to the Inbox immediately. But my initial configuration displays short titles for all message in my inbox. So I have to scroll left through them to get to the Inbox tab. How can I avoid doing this? Thanks to anyone who can help!!

I can see that you choose to open several emails in new tabs, so when reading and deleting one, the focus will move to the next opened email tab as it is expected that you want to continue reading the selected opened emails.

If there was only one email opened in a tab and you chose to delete it, Then you would be automatically taken back to the Inbox view.

If the first tab on left side is visible, you can click on it and it will show the folder you had last selected.

If first tab is not visible due to many opened tabs, you will see a left pointing chevron at the start of the tabs on the left side. Left click and hold down on left pointing chevon arrow and the tab display will quickly shift to the right exposing the tabs on the left. Then you can select the first tab.

To scroll through opened tabs using keyboard. Hold down 'Ctrl' key and press 'Tab' key.

You mention that you are a new user of Thunderbird. There are several ways of displaying an opened email. If you enable the 'Message Pane', a single click on email in list will open and display the email in the 'Message Pane' which will appear below the list. Please note it is not a 'preview'; it is an opened email. This method is a quick way of reading emails. If email is lengthy you may still want to use the double click to open in a tab. 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Layout' > select 'Message Pane' or toggle the view using F8 key.

You can also invert the list so all new messages appear at the top, this means you do not need to scroll for them when the Message Pane is enabled. Click on the 'Date column header to reverse the order of the list.

Can you post an image showing this, so people can understand what you are seeing?

This is what occurs in my case: select my Inbox to see list of emails, then double click on an email to open in a new tab. click on 'Delete' button. Tab auto closes. email is auto put in 'Deleted' folder view shows Inbox and list of emails.
