Opening internal and external links with current or new tab

Recently, Firefox decided to open every link in a new window. However, a little while ago, the browser would open external links (like shared content on Facebook that was from another website) in a new tab and it would open links such as Google links in the current tab. I was wondering how I could fix this in the "about:config". I have read about the meaning of each "browser.link.open_newwindow[...]" and what the numbers in the "value" column are for. I know that there are some kinds of links/websites that automatically open in a new tab/window and some that don't. However, when I change manually a value, I either end up with all kinds of links opening in new tabs, or all kinds of links opening in the current tab, which were not the settings I was used to when I first installed Firefox. I assume I don't clearly understand what are the values, so what I am looking for is, by opening this thread, a "recipe" to get the same configuration that I had previously.

Thank you very much,

Luna
