Why does Firefox say I don't have the latest version, when a version check shows that I do?

The home screen for Firefox always says "You don't have the latest version of Firefox.,,etc." When I do a version check, it shows that I have the latest version (currently says 8.0) and that I'm on the track for version updates.

You may see that message below the Google search box on www.google.com/firefox which is the old Firefox default home page. It appears that page is no longer being maintained. You appear to have Firefox 8.0 installed; there is a later version, 8.0.1, but it is an optional update for Windows users (see below)

If you want the Google search page as your home page, a new, updated version is now built-in to Firefox. Reset your home page to about:home for that new display.

Firefox 8.0.1
The update to Firefox 8.0.1 is not being "pushed" to Windows users; it is also not available by using Help > About Firefox > Check for Updates for Windows users. Firefox 8.0.1 was for a major problem for Java users with OSX (Mac); there was also a fix for a small number of Windows users with certain third-party Add-ons.

You can download the full installer at the link below, SAVE it to your Desktop, close Firefox after the download (Firefox button/File > Exit), run the installer.
