Gmail Archive By Year and Missing All Mail

I started out trying to get Gmail to archive my messages by year for my Default account. Yahoo mail does this really well and saves search times. I am starting to get the feeling that I can't do that with Gmail. But I discovered I am having other folder/label problems with Gmail. First, my folder list does not show an All Mail folder under Gmail (or anywhere else under this account). Under Subscribing I can see All Mail and it is checked. But All Mail doesn't show. In the web based Gmail the All Mail is visible and under Settings, Labels All Mail is "show" and "Show in IMAP" is checked.

I also have another gmail account (not the default) and All Mail does show in that folder list. I opened two web based Gmail windows, one for each Gmail account and compared the setting and they are identical. But still the Default folder list is missing All Mail.

Also, in the Default account on the web based, I created a sub-folder (gmail label) under Archive and drug a few messages to it. Those messages show fine in the web based window but in TB the Archive sub-folder is missing. If I go to Subscribe it is there and checked.

Should I give up on Gmail Archive by year and will the missing All Mail folder come back to bite me?

Thanks. Pete
