Why is text formatting of custom HTML elements not copied to the clipboard?

I have noticed that the formatting of text (font-weight, color, background-color etc) persists when copied to the clipboard only if the corresponding CSS rules are applied to standard HTML elements, whereas CSS rules applied to elements with custom tags (i.e. <custom style="color:red">copied text</custom>) won't persist when copied to the clipboard. Why is that? Can I do something about it?
