how to get acess to internet when my firefox icon does not respond

icon on my windows xp laptop was working as of yesterday when I click on the firefox mozilla icon the hour glass stays on a second then nothing happens. Its like firefox isn't responding. I have tried internet exployer also as I used this years ago, no luck . Can you help? I am on someone elses computer at present it is a very old one windows 98 so i cannot access much with it.

Have a look at some of the general advice does any of that help

  • safe mode
    • when you try that by, holding the shift key as you start, or from a suitable shortcut etc
      1. do you see the safe mode window with a list of options ?
      2. click on continue in safe mode, without making changes
  • firefox will not start <-- clickable link (blue) ---


The computer you are using appears to have an old Firefox 2 installed, it may be a good idea to upgrade that. See updating firefox

Can you describe what is and is not happening. Does firefox seem to start ok ?

Did you try safe mode ? and if so did you get as far as seeing the window with a list of options ?

What happens if you use Firefox offline, open some file on the local computer instead of on the internet ?

Could not get to safe mode. still no usuable icon for firefox cannot get on internet . you suggested upgrading firefox version, the computer i'm having trouble with has firefox 7 on it already.

Yes I understand you are using more than one computer.

You mention that firefox worked ok recently on the problem laptop. What is the Operating System (OS) on that machine, is it also Windows XP? if not then what is the OS ?

If it is a Windows machine have you tried to use Task Manager to work out what processes are running ?

  • are you able to find the processes
    • firefox.exe (you may need to start firefox to see that, in some cases you may see it anyway)
    • explorer.exe (that is not InternetExplorer the browser)
  • note in Task Manager these will be listed under the process tab and appear in the image name column.
