yahoo messenger wont work from within yahoo mail

Yahoo messenger used to connect as soon as I logged in to yahoo mail. Now it disables the messenger option an does not let me show my status because it does not log into the messenger. It happened when yahoo updated the mail to the new version. However if I use Chrome I do not have the problem, so it does not seem to be a yahoo problem but browser problem. I do not use explorer so I don't know if it works there. Using XP, new yahoo mail, firefox 5.0 (firefox for yahoo! UK&Ireland yahoogb -1.8)
