when i launched firefox 3.6.x this morning, it offered an upgrade to v3.7 (i think). i accepted and restarted system.

for about 2 hours, it ran smoothly and quickly for basic browsing.

when i tried to download a file from basecamp (37 signals), browser kept crashing (3x).

when i restarted system, all system functions started to flake out - explorer.exe errors (i assume that's the file system - i dont' use explorer browser), lost the desktop, no applications, can't even open the start menu.

every error says it failed to create a crash report.

what did this upgrade do to my OS?? how do i rollback to a stable version of firefox for win2k, and opt out of all future upgrade offers???

(NOTE: i am submitting this from an alternate system using winXP - i've had to stop using my primary system due to these problems which is win2k/SP4)

What Operating System are you using; is it Windows ME (I think some call that win2k) or is it one of the Server editions of Windows 2000?

It may be unusual not to use or at least have Internet Explorer installed on a Windows system, IE tends to be required for OS updates etc. Is the problem machine using a 64 or 32 bit processor & OS? (Firefox 4.0 is designed for 32 bit operation). Is the problem Firefox installation on a standalone single machine or are you using your own Local Area Network

Explorer.exe is as you say involved with file system navigation and the Windows Desktop. Upgrading Firefox, should not produce problems with Explorer.exe or your OS.

Installing previous versions of Firefox should be easy enough, but may not necessarily solve your problems. If you are having problems with your OS and other browsers then Firefox may not be the cause of your problems. Malware could be one possible cause.

win2k SP4 on a desktop, not server

32 bit processor

there is a simple LAN for printing and web access, and sharing betwen PCs, but FF installed on standalone PC

can't say for certain no malware, but no evidence of malware, and it went haywire immediately after update and restart.

please help how to roll back to prior FF??

Sorry I said rolling back should be easy but then did not say what to do, look at Install an older version of Firefox

I am not sure how to report problems with the Chat service, but you could try, starting a new thread and asking on this forum, someone may provide an answer. Or you could try the contributors forum, that would probably get some sort of answer try /forums/contributors
