why is firefox getting slower and slower and causing my desktop to slow down to?

Firefox is getting slower and slower, to the point it is almost unresponsive or even hangs. Further, it slows my system down as well. What is going on? It seems like each new version is getting more un-usable. You better do something because I have started to use Google Chrome and if I continue to have problems I just will stop using it.
