This started when before Firefox would open the following message popup would appear . . . what happened:TypeError: this.installDir is null (End of message.) So I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, that didn't work, but didn't get rid of my personal settings. Before I get rid of personal settings and reinstall I figured I would look for answers.

I have Firefox 3.6.8 LOL I wanted to check and make sure I had the version correct, and now clicking on about won't open.

My OS is W7 and I have a 64 bit system. Previous to a couple of days ago, I didn't have a problem.

Add-ons list will not open.

I also get a message about scripts running on the page are not working.

Do you have "ask-toolbar " installed? If you do, uninstall it to see if it helps.

Try running Firefox in safe mode and then see if you can access the add-ons manager. If you can then you should be able to uninstall add-ons from there.

Another thing to try is delete the files that contain details of installed add-ons. This can sometimes resolve problems with accessing the add-ons manager. Go to your profile folder, for details of how to access it see profiles.

Once you have opened the profile folder, close Firefox and delete extensions.cache, extensions.ini and extensions.rdf

Another option you can try is create a new profile, for details see Creating a new Firefox profile on Windows

If the new profile works you can transfer some settings such as bookmarks and passwords to it, see Transferring data to a new profile

I have had the same experience. Firefox was running OK until last Friday, then went bonkers. Reinstalling did not solve anything. I'm running XP on a new system. I had an old version, 3.0.5, that worked OK and I installed FF 4.0 beta 4, and that works fine. It just doesn't have all the refinements of 3.6.6, as far as add-ons, toolbars, extensions and such.
