What's up with the constant "Unresponsive Script" messages?

I have a MacBook Pro laptop at home and a larger Mac desktop at work. Unresponsive Script messages have been interrupting my workflow for months. I get them from many, varied websites and I get them from emails displaying in Outlook. It was recommended to me that in Firefox Preferences/Advanced I clear my cache. I have raised my cache limit to 500 MB and keep that page open all the time while working in Firefox, constantly clearing the cache to 0. I still get the messages. Would you say that there is a system incompatibility in Firefox that needs correction?
