Hi, I have upgraded my computer. With the old one when reading stories online I could finish a chapter and close firefox or my computer and the next time I went back to that story the chapters I had read would be highlighted so I knew where I'd left off. Now they won't stay highlighted once I shut down and it's driving me mad because I keep losing my place. The website hosting the stories had an upgrade around the time I got my new computer so I don't know if it's their problem or mine. I have asked the website to help but they replied that it was my issue and I needed to adjust my settings on firefox. I am completely non-computer savvy and have tried to find a way to fix it but I can't. I've tried searching firefox help for an answer but noone seems to have had the same problem as me neither can I understand the tech speak to work it out for myself. I'd be grateful of any assistance, thanks.

A especially usually stores such settings in a cookie on your computer.

You can use these steps to make a website remember you:

  • Create a cookie 'allow' exception to keep such cookies, especially in case of secure websites and when cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
  • Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: Exceptions

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.

  • do not clear the Cookies
  • do not clear the Site Preferences
  • Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.
  • Clearing Cookies will remove all specified (selected) cookies including cookies with an allow exception that you want to keep.

Hi Cor-el, thank you for your help. I made sure everything is set the way you advised. I 'allowed' cookies, don't 'clear history when Firefox closes' etc but nothing worked. That's when I really started to think about CCleaner which I run before I shut down my computer each day. I had 'cookies' and 'site preferences' un-ticked in it's (Firefox) application so I thought the problem was with Firefox itself (and the privacy settings you guided me to)and not with CCleaner. Anyway, I started un-ticking all the boxes one by one, running CCleaner then opening my story website to see if the chapters were staying highlighted, then closing the site down and running the CCleaner again. Nothing worked until I un-ticked 'internet history' on CCleaner, then the story chapters stayed highlighted. I don't know why it worked and I'll check it tomorrow after my computer has been shut down to make sure but I'm hoping I've found the answer, fingers crossed. Again, thank you for your help, I had not been into Firefox's settings before and probably wouldn't have without your guidance and I should know how to do those things. Joanne.
