Firefox popout links not generating tabs

When I'm browsing and I press command N (on a mac) and it pops up a new window, it has a tab at the top that I can combine with other tabs. When I click on a link within a website (like google drive from my google account for example), a new window pops up without a tab at the top (It's not just google). Everything else about the browser still works, but was there some sort of update that changed this? Has anybody else noticed this?

It sounds like you are running into a new problem other users have discovered with certain links in private browsing windows with tabbed browsing turned off.

To confirm, is this what you're experiencing:

(1) You have turned off the default "tabbed" browsing setting in Preferences -- so website links coded to open in a new window are not diverted to a new tab instead

(2) When you click a link that specifies opening in a new window (using the target="_blank" attribute) the new window has only a partial toolbar, no menu bar, no bookmarks toolbar, and maybe no scroll bar

For now, if you do not like tabbed browsing, I think the best workaround is to hold down the Shift key while clicking links. Firefox then will launch the link in a new window with the same menus and toolbars as the window launching the link.

Thanks for the quick reply. Shift click totally worked! I like to tab browse for some things like multiple google docs in one window, but I mostly separate different windows in spaces. You were right about no toolbar, menu bar, tab, etc. But it always used to open with tabs, and now it doesn't - annoying.

I'm not sure if this bug has been reported yet, but I'm sure this wasn't an intentional change.

Here's a brief update:

Work on this bug is in process, but I don't know if the fix will be available in the next few weeks.

Another workaround is to change certain hidden setting related to dialog-style windows. This will not require you to make any changes to how you use Firefox, but you might occasionally need to enlarge some small pop-up windows that were sized for a window with no toolbars displayed.

Here are the steps:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste feat and pause while the list is filtered

(3) For every preference that starts with dom.disable_window_open_feature. if it is not "true", double-click it to switch it to true.

You may find that you prefer this anyway, since sites can no longer strip these features out of pop-up windows.

Ok I did that. 7 of them were set to "false" so I switched them to "true". It looks like it stopped the issue. At least for now. Thanks
