I have Firefox pinned to the Windows 7 taskbar on the bottom of my screen. I use a desktop PC. Most of the time, when I click on the icon, it opens Firefox with no problem. However, occasionally when I first turn my computer on and click on the Firefox icon on the taskbar, it gets highlighted but the little circle doesn't appear and the highlight fades away without opening the browser. When that happens, I can't even shut my computer off without pressing the button on the tower. That only ever happens the first time I open the browser in the morning, and it seems to be happening every couple of weeks. Any thoughts about what's going on? I just had a virus removal done, so that shouldn't be the problem.

Blinkie yes, the forum did get spammed yesterday and we managed to remove the spam ASAP. Unfortunately, since SUMO sends out e-mail notifications for new replies immediately, this doesn't allow Moderators to edit out or remove the spam before hitting the user's inbox. There is talks on the private Moderator forum [Mods: see /forums/forum-moderators/709969?page=3#post-57491) about suggesting to add a adding a short delay or "grace period" from the time a new reply is posted to the time the email notification is sent out" and that "That would give moderators a chance to delete the spam or offensive content." Quotes by AliceWyman, fellow Mod)

FredMcD Just to clear things up on your question, new reply notifications get sent from notifications@support.mozilla.org so asking the user to report the e-mail address here, you would be reporting that e-mail address and we can't do anything about it. That is a internal system used by Mozilla for the purpose of notifying users about replies.

I hope this answers both your questions and concerns about the spam incident.

FYI, if you see spam anywhere, please click the Report Abuse button on the right side of the reply so it can be removed by Moderators. Thanks!

If your system is working............Great ! !

It's starts without that program, but I don't know for sure yet that I'm not going to have the same problem, since it doesn't always happen. I'd like to know the difference between those two things, and I can't find the answer on line.

Just keep an eye out for problems.

I will, thanks.

Now I have another problem. I went into the tools/options/privacy and change my history to custom and checked empty cache box upon closing. Now I'm having a hard time getting firefox to open at all. I kept getting a page that just said new tab and even that wouldn't load. I deleted firefox and reinstalled it. I even did a system restore. I kept getting an error message that firefox wouldn't close and I ended the process. I messed it up somehow, and I don't know if I can close it or get back onto it again now. I've got the setting back on remember history and no longer empty the cache. I hope I can get back here in the morning to read this, but HELP. Thanks.

Are you only clearing the cache or cookies as well as the latter (clearing cookies) is a more likely cause for issues?

Note that Firefox disables the disk cache if you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear the cache, see the about:cache page.

At this point, you may want to totally Uninstall Firefox from your computer. First, download the full installer and put it away for now. After doing the uninstall, check and even remove the FF folder. After, run the malware scans again. Once all this is done, then install FF fresh. Do Not change any settings, just open and close it a few times. Also try a few SAFE web pages.

I thought I clicked on the box that said clear cache when firefox closes. I had always had it that way until I was told to reinstall firefox because of my last problem. Everything is back like it was now with that box undone, and I was able to open firefox this morning. I just don't know yet if I'm going to get the error message that firefox is still running when I try to open it again later. I've never had so much trouble with this stuff before, and it's frustrating me. I guess the system restore I did to my computer didn't undo what happened to firefox. I certainly thought uninstalling and reinstalling firefox would fix it. Maybe it's OK now. I was doing this late last night and getting more frustrated by the minute.

When I did the thing where I right clicked on the bar on the bottom and closed firefox that way when it said it was still running, did THAT totally screw it up?

Firefox opened OK again, so I hope I undid whatever it was that I did.

I can't thank you all enough for being here for me when I have computer meltdowns.

I doubt it. Whether you close Firefox using the X on the top right of the window (this would only close that window), or right click the task-bar and close it from there (also only close that window), or you use Firefox > Exit or toolbar Firefox Tools > Exit (this closes Firefox completely) should not cause a problem. The likelly problem is an add-on or program in the computer.

Keep an eye out and ask for help when you need it. For now, use FF without any add-ons.

Thanks, again.

I found the setting to stop getting email notifications, and they're no longer in my trash. I'm sure it's the same person.

Back to my original issue...I've been writing down the date I can't open Firefox when I turn my computer on, and the last 2 times it happened was on January 14th and February 14th. I need to take my computer back into Staples because I'm still having other issues, but I found those dates to be interesting.

Moses; I am sorry. At the time I had not known of the spamming. I had thought it was from e-mail.

Yes, I was getting emails, which probably came from the same people. Not sure why I'm still getting email notification when I thought I ended them, but I'm fine if they're legit.

Blinkie: e-mails from notifications@support.mozilla.org are safe when it says "Blinkie commented on a Firefox question you're watching‏" or such. It's the content of the post that you are finding. Everything from notifications@support.mozilla.org is indeed from this site, it's just some others like to spam others for the hell of it such as what you saw before. See my comment below on this

But yes they are legit. We don't control what's in the e-mails, it's just a redirect to the comment on your questions. If someone were to spam that, SUMO would automatically send that out and we would try to remove it ASAP. See comment above.

Thanks. I unsubscribed from the email I was sent, so that obviously wasn't the real thing. It's getting to the point where I'm afraid to click on anything.
